Day 1: The Drive, and Canyonlands

Ready to see some more pictures?

I have been editing pictures like a madwoman all morning!  I thought I could narrow them all down to a reasonable amount for a blog post, but that number ended up being 81, and that's only Day 1.  That's a crazy amount of pictures, even for me...so I'm going to do my best to pick the best ones to post on here.  The rest of them will probably be on facebook or flickr, so if you want, you can check out the whole shebang on one of those places.  (If you're not on facebook, and need a guest pass to my flickr album, let me know and I will email it to you.)

Alrightly then, on to Day 1!

We started out the day like this:
D1Canyonlands
Surprise, surprise, it snowed overnight.

Next we headed to the puppy-sitter to drop off Copper, (how that went is a whole other post), and then we were on the road.  Yay!

D1Canyonlands (1)
This picture was taken right around North Salt Lake City, when a car spun out and did a 360.  Thankfully, it was behind us, and the car didn't hit anything.  The roads didn't look slick, but apparently they were.

D1Canyonlands (3)
The road's not looking much better here.

D1Canyonlands (7)
D1Canyonlands (8)
Canyons in Carbon County.  I wish I would have gotten pictures of the entrances of the train tunnels.  The architecture was amazing.  You could tell they were built back in the day when things were made to be beautiful, and not just functional.

D1Canyonlands (9)
That's what I'm talking about!  Buh-bye snow!  It got really flat, really quick after Carbon County.  In this area there was a dinosaur dig site off the side of the road.  Very cool!

D1Canyonlands (10)
Our first sighting of red rocks!

D1Canyonlands (11)
Where Adventure Begins.  Yep, that was our plan. : )

D1Canyonlands (12)
So all along we were expecting red rock, but some of the first colors we saw right outside of Moab, was this turquoise-y color.

D1Canyonlands (14)
Almost there!

At this point we went ahead and drove into Moab, filled up with gas, checked where our hotel was, and then headed to Canyonlands.

D1Canyonlands (15)
Up through the mountain with roads that were constant switchbacks.  Not as bad as last summer on some of the road we drove on in California, but it definitely took awhile to get there.

D1Canyonlands (16)
We made it!

The first thing we checked out was the Upheaval Dome.
D1Canyonlands (17)
They don't know if it was made from a salt mound collapse or a meteor striking the Earth, but it was awesome to see.

D1Canyonlands (18)
We had to go on a little hike to get there.

D1Canyonlands (19)
Mostly uphill, of course.

D1Canyonlands (20)
I loved all these old twisty trees.

D1Canyonlands (21)
More climbing.  Ha.  We didn't actually have to climb that part, but that was how steep it was.

D1Canyonlands (22)
I can't imagine climbing on this rock when it's wet, it was slippery when it was dry.

D1Canyonlands (23)
First glimpse of the huge crater.

D1Canyonlands (25)
Checking out the view. (Or checking out what the mommy was doing depending on the man.) : )

D1Canyonlands (29)
D1Canyonlands (26)
I hope you can get a feel for how big this thing was.  I couldn't get it all in one shot.

D1Canyonlands (30)
After we left Upheaval Dome, we went to check out Whale Rock.  You see that little dot on top of his "nose?"

D1Canyonlands (31)
There was a man up there!

D1Canyonlands (32)
One of many buttes in Canyonlands.  I'm sure it had a name, Aztec Butte maybe, but I'm not for sure.

D1Canyonlands (33)
Next up we have the Green River Overlook.

D1Canyonlands (34)
Spectacular!

D1Canyonlands (35)
Distant cliffs.

D1Canyonlands (37)
It's amazing what a little water, wind and time can do.

Don't look Mom!
D1Canyonlands (38)
Over the edge.

D1Canyonlands (39)
Brennan and Mommy.

D1Canyonlands (40)
Brennan and Daddy.  One of our catch phrases on the trip was, "King of the Rock!"  Every time Brennan got to the top of something, (even the little boulders in the parking lot, lol.) he would say that.

D1Canyonlands (41)
Another thing we said a lot was, "That's way far down."  Here's Jason checking out just how far down that was.  It was WAY far down.

D1Canyonlands (42)
Another canyon.

D1Canyonlands (43)
Snow covered mountains in the distance.

D1Canyonlands (44)
This area was called the Grand View Overlook.  I wish I would have taken a video.  No matter what direction you were looking, there was something cool to see.

D1Canyonlands (45)
This canyon was carved out by the Colorado River.  The same river that made the Grand Canyon.

D1Canyonlands (48)
It was a little windy.  You might be able to tell from Brennan's face.  You might be able to tell from Jason's face that he is sporting a growth for March Moustache Madness.  Thank goodness tomorrow starts April, and that thing will be gone.  That's all I have to say about that. : )

D1Canyonlands (49)
We did some hiking along the trail at the Grand View.

D1Canyonlands (51)
Brennan was on a constant lookout for what rock he was going to pick up next.

D1Canyonlands (52)
There were all kind of 4x4 trails down there.  We are definitely going to check them out next time.

D1Canyonlands (54)
D1Canyonlands (56)
A long way down.

D1Canyonlands (62)
They had these cairns all along the way so we didn't lose our way.

D1Canyonlands (61)
Um yeah, as if that was even possible with the 6,000 ft dropoff to the side of us.

D1Canyonlands (63)
The view just got better and better.

D1Canyonlands (65)
More slick rock.

D1Canyonlands (66)
More stairs.

D1Canyonlands (69)
Buck Canyon.

D1Canyonlands (70)
Don't the mountains look like they were floating back there?

By this time everyone was tired so we headed back to the room.

D1Canyonlands (76)
D1Canyonlands (73)
Of course I had to take a few more pictures on the way out.

D1Canyonlands (78)
"We've got cows."  **Name that movie.**

D1Canyonlands (79)
" 'Nother Cow."  **Same movie.**  Ha, I just crack myself up.  As for the cows, it's free range around Canyonlands, so they were everywhere...and apparently they aren't a bit afraid of cars.

D1Canyonlands (80)
Back down the curvy road.

D1Canyonlands (81)
Time to relax back at the hotel with full bellies, jammies, and some cartoons for the little man.

Ahh, what a great day!

So, that was Day 1 of our Moab adventure.  I should have Day 2 up by Monday.

Have a great weekend everyone!

We're Baaack!

From our awesome Moab vacation!

Did you miss us?

Actually most of you probably didn't even know we were gone.  I didn't make a big announcement just in case there are some creepy blog lurkers out there that would get any creepy ideas knowing our house was empty.

We had such a great time!  I have almost 800 pictures that I need to go through, and over the next few days I plan on sharing the best of them with you.  I went ahead and picked a couple of them to share today, because you know I hate a blog post without pictures!

Jeepin'
While we were at Moab, we did some off-roading!  It was so much fun!  Brennan kept saying, "Jeep bouncing!"  Yep, just a little!

You like the Jeep in the picture?  That's another item I haven't blogged about yet.  It's ours!  A couple weeks ago Jason traded in the truck and now we are official Jeep owners.  Moab turned out to be the perfect place to break it in.  : )

Balanced Rock
Here we are at Balanced Rock at Arches National Park.  If you have never been, I highly recommend a road trip to this area.  Everything around Moab is just so awe inspiring.  I can already tell you the pictures don't do it justice.  I can't even imagine what the pioneers thought when they first got here.  There's really nothing else I've ever seen that even comes close.

North Window
This is the North Window Arch.  It was super windy up there!  I don't know if you can see the death grip Jason has on Brennan, but on the other side of the arch, it was as Brennan said, "A LONG way down!"

So there you go, a little sneak peek of our time away.  Be sure to come back tomorrow to see some more!

No packages today.

The UPS man and the pizza delivery man are just the most fascinating things to Brennan right now.  He loves that they ring the doorbell and bring us stuff. : )

This afternoon he heard the big brown truck on the street and had to check it out.

No packages today.

This was right as he figured out that it wasn't stopping at our house today.

Bummer.

The Best Thrifty Shopping Trip. Ever.

So this morning when I got up I was grumpy.  No particular reason why, I was just having one of those days.  So after we did our morning routine and I dropped Brennan off at school, I decided to stop by the thrift store.  Shopping therapy, of course.

I am so glad I did!  I went with the intention of looking for world globes and old suitcases.  I didn't find either of those, but I did finds lots of cool stuff.  Even better, I had a 20% off coupon for all my loot.  Whoo Hoo!

So the first thing I found was this little bunny.
Thrifty Finds - Bunny
He made me happy, so I figured even if I didn't find anything else, at least he gave me the attitude adjustment I needed.

In this next aisle over, I found this tray.
Thrifty Finds - Tray
I love it!  It's one of those things I didn't know I was looking for and then the light bulb went off.  I plan on growing some herbs in my kitchen here shortly, and this will be perfect to hold all the little pots.

I think I heard singing when I found this guy.
Thrifty Finds - Cheese Dome
I know, it's just a cheese dome.  But I have been looking for one of these (really cheap) forever.  There are all kinds of bloggy decorators out there that have found these things and made them really cute, and they all say, "look at your thrift store to find one, they always have them."  Well, at my thrift store, cheese domes are like mythical creatures....until today.  And at $1.99, I felt like I had just won the lottery.

Pretty blue and white plate.
Thrifty Finds - Blue & White Plate
I have been picking up unique plates here and there over the last few months, and this fits nicely with my budding collection.

A rainbow afghan.
Thrifty Finds - Rainbow Afghan
How cute is this?!  It doesn't look like it has even been used.  No pilling or snags or stains at all.  It goes perfectly with the new colorful decorating I have been doing lately that I haven't blogged about yet. : )  What I love most about it, is that I just know that a grandma made it, and grandma blankets are the best.

So at this point, I was on a thrifter's high.  I could have left right then and been super happy.  But the area where I would find old globes and suitcases is in the back of the store, so I thought I better check, just in case.

As I already mentioned, I didn't find any globes or suitcases, but I did find this.
Thrifty Finds - Little Chairs
A little cutie patootie, Brennan-sized farmhouse chair!  LOVE it!  It's pretty dirty, and it has no finish on it whatsoever (less sanding for me!)  but I know it's going to turn out to be the cutest chair ever.

Really, at this point, can I reasonably ask any more from my thrifting trip?

Why, yes, yes I can!

Next I found these.
Thrifty Finds - Brass Lamps
...for $3.99 each.  Score!  Look beyond the tarnished brass, and just look at the shape of these beauties!  Some spray paint and some new shades and they are going to look like a million bucks!

At this point I am done.  My little cart is full, and I'm guarding it like a crazy woman.  I just knew those other ladies were eye-balling my little chair and my mythic cheese dome.

But in this case, as luck would have it, I have to walk through the clothes and accessories section to get to the checkouts.

So first I find these.
Thrifty Finds - Brennan Clothes
A Spring jacket, and a shirt with a guitar on it for Brennan.  Cute.

And then I find these.
Thrifty Finds - Purses
Two cute purses.  But not just any old purses.  The one on the left is a Guess purse, which I am using as my everyday purse.

The other one....
Thrifty Finds - Prada
Yeah baby, Prada!  Now I am not usually one to get too caught up caring about designer purses, but a super-cute leather Prada bag for $8.99...I think so!!  I can't wait to use it for date night next weekend.

...and just so you know,  I solemnly vow that the inside of my new Prada will never see a Matchbox car or a pack of crayons. : )

Have a great weekend everyone!
